Modern interfaces look remarkably similar regardless of the cultures they serve.

CIF investigates whether interface systems can emerge from anthropological knowledge instead of inherited software conventions. We ask: what would a digital interface look like if it were built from the behavioural logic of a specific culture, rather than translated from Western design patterns?

The project treats each culture as a source of design logic rather than a target for localisation. By mapping behavioural principles from ethnographic research to atomic design components, CIF constructs interface experiments that are culturally native rather than culturally adapted.

This is not about adding cultural decoration to existing interfaces. It is about deriving interface primitives from the way a culture organises knowledge, relates to authority, perceives time, and structures social interaction.

Emerging Findings

Observation 01

Modern interface systems contain cultural assumptions that are invisible to their creators but legible to anthropologists.

Observation 02

Behaviour translates into symbols more consistently than layouts. A culture's symbolic logic is more portable than its spatial logic.

Observation 03

Interaction primitives remain the largest open research challenge. We still do not know how to derive a button from a culture.
