Cultural Interaction Framework — Phase Three

Zaure

An independently derived computational interaction language for the Hausa civilisation — grown from thirty-two behavioural principles and eight meta-principles, not from any existing social platform or prior CIF case study.

Every colour, shape, spacing rule, motion curve, and icon in this document is traced to a specific behavioural principle. Where an assumption from conventional software UI had no such grounding, it was removed. Part 5 documents that removal.

Part 1

Computational Philosophy

If Hausa civilisation had invented graphical computing independently, the screen would not be a window onto a private feed. It would behave like a gida — a compound one is received into, greeted at the threshold, and moves through in graduated stages of intimacy. The ten questions below are answered from the principles, not from precedent.

Identity

Identity is nested and relational, never a single profile. A person is rendered as lineage → quarter → city → faith, with the salient layer shifting by context (P1, P19). There is no single "bio" field — there is a stack of belongings, and the interface asks which layer is speaking right now.

Derived from P1 Relational Personhood, P19 Multi-Layered Identity

Trust

Trust is not a follower count. It accrues through repeated interaction, fulfilled obligation, and guarantee by a respected third party — the same mechanism that underwrote trans-Saharan credit. The system therefore surfaces who vouches for whom, not how many strangers clicked a button.

Derived from P13 Trust-Based Commerce ('amana'), P2 Reputation as Social Currency

Memory

Memory is oral and custodial, not an infinite archival scroll. Content is held by someone — a rememberer — and is retrieved through relationship and recitation, echoing the 'maroka' and 'magaji' who carried genealogies and chronicles for their communities.

Derived from P11 Oral Memory Systems

Authority

Authority is plural and earned — age, religious knowledge, generosity, and demonstrated wisdom all confer standing, and even the highest authority (the Sarki) governed through council, not decree. The interface never lets one voice silence a room; it always shows the consultation.

Derived from P3 Consultative Decision-Making, P4 Hierarchical Deference

Attention

Attention is requested, not seized. A raised interruption is a social breach; things enter a person's world in greeting order — acknowledgment before content — mirroring the mandatory sequence of blessing → inquiry → matter.

Derived from P9 Ritualized Greeting, P7 Indirect Communication

Belonging

Belonging is established through multiple concurrent pathways — birth, marriage, shared language, faith, trade, loyalty — and can be held at several nested levels simultaneously without contradiction. There is no single "join" action; there are many doors.

Derived from Principle 1 §14, P19 Multi-Layered Identity

Privacy

Privacy is graduated by spatial proximity, not a binary public/private toggle. A compound has a reception threshold (zaure) for outsiders and an inner courtyard for family; content inherits the same graduated thresholds rather than one visibility switch.

Derived from P5 Gendered Spatial Segregation, P16 Inward-Facing Domestic Architecture

Knowledge

Knowledge is validated by source and by the reputation of the knower, transmitted through apprenticeship rather than delivered as an anonymous document. Anything taught in the system names its teacher and its lineage of transmission.

Derived from P10 Apprenticeship-Based Knowledge Transfer

Time

Time is segmented by rhythm, not stamped by the clock. The day divides into the five prayer segments; the year divides into damina and rani. A moment is described by where it falls in that rhythm before it is described by minute and hour.

Derived from P15 Sacred Time Structuring, P30 Seasonal Agricultural Rhythm

Discovery

Discovery happens the way a stranger enters a city: through the market and the quarter, not an algorithmic firehose. Content surfaces because it passed through a craft-quarter (a community of practice) or a market day (a bounded, social occasion for exchange) — never as an infinite undifferentiated stream.

Derived from P22 Nested Spatial Organization, P13 Trust-Based Commerce
Part 2

Foundational Design Language

The visual system is a wall, not a screen. It borrows its logic from the compound: earth surfaces, indigo ink, gold that only appears where something is given, and a red-brown that marks a threshold to be crossed. Nothing here is decorative — each token maps to a behavioural rule.

Colour Semantics

Colour in Zaure does not encode brand — it encodes social function. Gold is withheld until something is actually given (P20, wealth as obligation: hoarding is shameful, so the colour of wealth cannot sit static on a screen — it must be triggered by an act of giving). Green is nearly absent from the palette entirely and appears only at the moment harmony is restored (P14, yafewa) — using it decoratively elsewhere would cheapen the one moment it is allowed to mean something.

Ground
#EDE0C8
Base surface — freshly plastered compound wall
Raised Ground
#C99A5B
Raw adobe — a surface offered forward, e.g. a card
Ink
#26314A
Kano indigo — authority, elder speech, primary text
Silence
#5A6478
P31 — a meaningful pause, never used as an "empty/error" grey
Given Gold
#B8823A
P20 — appears only at the instant something is given, never as a static balance
Threshold
#9C4A26
P9 — marks a boundary to be greeted/crossed: entry points, consultation prompts
Harmony
#5C6B3B
P14 — reserved exclusively for restored/resolved states (yafewa)

Typography Philosophy

Hausa authority is spoken deliberately (P4 — elders speak slowly and authoritatively; juniors speak less). Display type is therefore set wide, with generous letter-spacing that forces a slower reading pace, rather than compressed headline type built for scanning speed. Body type keeps a higher x-height for the same reason oral cultures favour clarity over density: it is read the way something is recited, not skimmed.

Display — elder speech, measured
Sunan kyau ya fi doki.
A good name is worth more than a horse. Set wide, never condensed — deliberateness is the point.
Body — oral clarity
Trust is built through repeated interaction and the guarantee of a respected third party.
Higher x-height, generous line-height — legible the way a recitation is followed, not the way a document is scanned.
Utility — record-keeping (magaji, court chronicle)
damina · 14 · gida-3 · amana:confirmed
Monospace reserved for ledger-like data — timestamps, provenance, obligation records — echoing the professional rememberer's precise account-keeping (P11).

Spacing Philosophy — Nested Modularity

Spacing is not a flat 4/8/16px scale used because that is convention. It is four literal containment tiers — gida (household) inside unguwa (quarter) inside birni (city) — each with its own padding value, so that nesting a component visually re-creates walking inward through a compound (P22, P16).

zaure — reception threshold
Outer band — birni (city) padding: 48px Middle band — unguwa (quarter) padding: 28px Inner band — gida (household) padding: 16px Innermost mark — zaure (reception threshold) padding: 8px

Motion Philosophy — Greeting Order

Nothing in Zaure pops in instantly. Every arrival follows the mandatory greeting sequence (P9): a beat of acknowledgment, then the substantive content, with a deliberate pause between — never a snap or a bounce, which would read as an interruption rather than a greeting.

AcknowledgmentSalama — a presence has arrived.
InquiryLafiya lau — the wellbeing check.
MatterThe content itself is now shown.

Geometry — The Zaure Arch & the Faceted Module

Islamic aniconism (P21) channels all ornament into geometry, calligraphy, and relief carving — never figuration. Every shape in this system, including every icon, is assembled from one recombinable module: a faceted, truncated rhombus, echoing carved mud-relief tiles. Joins are angular, never rounded-soft; softness would read as playful, and playful is not the register of a threshold.

The base module: a faceted, truncated rhombus. Every icon glyph is built from this shape.
The zaure arch line — a stepped threshold silhouette used as the master divider motif throughout the system.

Elevation & Rhythm

Elevation follows spatial proximity to the threshold, not arbitrary z-index drama. A resting card sits flat against the wall (P16, inward-facing architecture keeps the outside quiet); a card actively being offered or requiring consultation is lifted and framed in threshold-red, echoing the moment a matter is formally brought before elders (P3).

RestingSits flat within the wall. No shadow — nothing is being offered yet.
OfferedLifted gently — content has been placed forward for attention.
In ConsultationFramed in threshold-red — this requires a decision or response.
Part 3

The Atomic System

Every atom below is stated as: what it is for, how it behaves, its states, its visual and interaction philosophy, accessibility notes, the principles that produced it, and — critically — how and why it departs from the conventional web-UI version of the same idea. Nothing survives here just because "that's how apps do it."

Navigation

Hausa spatial cognition is nested, not flat (P22: birni → unguwa → gida). Conventional top-nav bars imply a single flat menu of destinations of equal rank. That has no grounding here — so navigation instead reads as moving inward through a compound, and a "back" action is a literal act of stepping back out through a threshold.

Unguwa (Quarter)
Gida (Household)
Zaure (Threshold)
Quarter Marker
not a "nav item" — a named place you can stand in
Purpose
Names one nested space the person can move into. Ordered by containment depth, not alphabetically or by popularity.
Behaviour
A left rule brightens and thickens to threshold-red when the current place is active; there is deliberately no icon-plus-label pairing, since spoken place-names carry the meaning (P11, oral memory over iconography).
States
restinghere (active)unavailable — not yet a member
Visual philosophy
Flat text on a spine, echoing a quarter list read aloud rather than a row of app icons.
Accessibility
Current place announced via aria-current="location" (not "page" — location matches the spatial metaphor); focus ring uses threshold colour at 3px, exceeding contrast minimums against ground.
Derived from P22 Nested Spatial Organization, P1 Relational Personhood
Differs from a nav bar: items are not siblings of equal rank, they are container-of/contained-by each other, and only one path down the nest can be "current" at a time.
you are here
Compound Frame
replaces the sidebar/topbar shell entirely
Purpose
Holds the full set of quarter markers and visually communicates nesting depth by container padding, not by indentation or a hamburger icon.
Behaviour
Expands outward as you move to broader scopes (birni-level) and inward as you narrow (gida-level) — it physically resizes rather than sliding a drawer over content.
States
birni scopeunguwa scopegida scope
Why it differs
A sidebar assumes one flat list bolted to a screen edge. This frame assumes you are physically standing somewhere in a nested structure, so its own shape changes with depth.
Derived from P22 Nested Spatial Organization, P16 Inward-Facing Domestic Architecture
Kano Quarter Dye-Pit Guild This Conversation
Threshold Path (breadcrumb replacement)
a recitable lineage, not a URL trail
Purpose
States, in speakable order, the nested containment the current view sits inside — the same way a person states lineage before individual name (P1).
Interaction philosophy
Each segment is a place you can be received back into, phrased as a location, never as a filesystem-style path.
Why it differs
A breadcrumb models a folder hierarchy. This models a stated lineage — the emphasis is on being able to say where you are, aloud, not on a mechanical path back.
Derived from P1 Relational Personhood, P22 Nested Spatial Organization
Consultation Trigger (menu trigger replacement)
"more options" reframed as "call the elders in"
Purpose
Opens a small consultative panel of further actions — framed as gathering additional respected options, not a dense dropdown of every possible command.
Behaviour
Never opens instantly; a brief settle-pause (var(--dur-settle)) precedes the panel, matching the deliberateness of convening a discussion (P3).
Accessibility
aria-haspopup="menu", labelled "More ways to respond" rather than a bare icon-only control with no name.
Derived from P3 Consultative Decision-Making
A conventional kebab menu implies an arbitrary command dump. This is scoped and small, since the culture treats an excess of unrequested options as noise rather than power.
Step back to the quarter
Step Back
names the place you're returning to, not just "back"
Purpose
Returns one level of containment outward and always states the destination place by name, since silent "back" arrows give no relational context (P1: identity/place is always named, never implicit).
States
restingpressedunavailable at outermost scope
Derived from P1 Relational Personhood, P22 Nested Spatial Organization

Identity

Identity is nested and never rests on a single photo-as-self default (P1, P19, P21). A profile picture as the primary identity signal has no grounding here — Islamic aniconism channels self-representation into pattern, lineage naming, and demonstrated conduct rather than a face.

Generated lineage-mark, not a photo
Lineage Mark (avatar replacement)
a woven geometric seal unique to the person, never a face
Purpose
Identifies a person at a glance without figuration — a nested rhombus seal generated from their name and lineage, the digital equivalent of a family's textile or relief pattern.
Behaviour
Deterministically generated from lineage data so the same family shares a recognisable base pattern with individual variation layered in, mirroring how quarters and guilds share visual motifs (P22).
States
resting sealverified — gold inlay addedunset — plain outline only
Accessibility
Always paired with the spoken name in text; the mark is decorative supplement, never the sole identifier (alt text carries full name + primary lineage layer).
Derived from P21 Aniconic Aesthetic Expression, P1 Relational Personhood
A photo avatar assumes the face is the self. Here the self is a name embedded in relationships, so the mark encodes lineage geometry, never a likeness.
Aisha · daughter of the Yusufu lineage
Kano quarter · dye-guild
Layered Name
stacked identity layers, salience shifts by context
Purpose
Displays a person as a stack — given name, lineage, place, guild — rather than a single username, matching how Hausa names accumulate layers across a lifetime (P19).
Behaviour
The layer most relevant to the current space is bolded; entering a craft-guild space bolds guild affiliation, entering a family space bolds lineage.
Derived from P19 Multi-Layered Identity, P1 Relational Personhood
A username is a single flat string chosen once. This is multiple true facts about the person, weighted contextually.
Vouched by three respected members
Guarantee Mark (verification replacement)
a checkmark issued by a platform has no grounding here
Purpose
Shows that respected community members personally guarantee this identity — the exact trust mechanism used in trans-Saharan commerce (P13, amana) — rather than a badge issued unilaterally by the system.
Behaviour
Reveals the names of the guarantors on inspection; the mark is meaningless without them, so it can never be a bare icon with no accountable source.
Derived from P13 Trust-Based Commerce, P2 Reputation as Social Currency
A generic verified checkmark asserts platform authority. This asserts named, inspectable human vouching, matching how trust was actually built.
Sunan Kyau
Known for: generosity, keeping her word, hospitality
Good Name (reputation marker replacement)
qualitative, never a numeric score
Purpose
States what a person is specifically known for — piety, generosity, hospitality, honesty — rather than reducing reputation to a single number (P2: sunan kyau is accumulated through demonstrated conduct across specific virtues).
Behaviour
Populated only from things others have actually said/attested, never self-declared; cannot be inflated by the person themself.
Derived from P2 Reputation as Social Currency (sunan kyau), P20 Wealth as Social Obligation
A star rating or karma score compresses reputation into a single sortable number. This deliberately resists that compression, because the culture's reputation system is qualitative and narrative.
Present, between the asr and maghrib prayers
Presence Within the Rhythm
time-segment presence, not a binary green dot
Purpose
Shows presence relative to the day's prayer-segmented rhythm (P15) rather than a raw "online now" boolean, since Hausa time is understood by segment, not by the clock.
States
present, named segmentresting (night, after isha)unstated — no presence claim shown
Derived from P15 Sacred Time Structuring
A green dot implies constant surveillance-grade availability. This states a time segment, which is coarser and more socially appropriate.

Interaction

Consultative decision-making (P3) means an action rarely belongs to one person alone, and indirectness (P7, P31) means refusal is never a blunt red "no." These two facts reshape every control below.

Offer this
Offering Action (primary button)
a faceted, notched form — an object being handed over
Purpose
Commits an offer outward — publishing, sending, giving. Framed with an "offering" verb, not a generic "submit," because wealth/effort given is socially significant (P20).
Behaviour
Confirms with the given-gold accent flashing briefly at the moment of commit — gold appears only at the instant of giving, never before.
States
restingpressedgiven (gold flash)withheld/disabled
Accessibility
Notched clip-path shape retains a fully rectangular hit-area for touch/click; label always a verb naming the actual social act.
Derived from P20 Wealth as Social Obligation, P9 Ritualized Greeting
Consider first
Considering Action (secondary button)
outline only — nothing is given yet, only weighed
Purpose
A lower-commitment action — reviewing, holding a matter for later consultation — rendered as unfilled outline since nothing has been offered yet.
Why it differs
Conventional secondary buttons are just visually quieter primaries. Here the emptiness of the fill is meaningful: it is the visual state of "not yet decided," matching the consultative pause before commitment (P3).
Derived from P3 Consultative Decision-Making
Sealed Action (icon button)
always carries a spoken label on hover/focus — no orphaned glyphs
Purpose
A compact single-purpose action rendered inside the faceted seal shape, reserved for frequent, low-stakes acts.
Accessibility
Every icon-only control has a mandatory visible label on focus/hover — grounded in the oral-culture insistence that meaning is spoken (P11), not silently assumed from a glyph alone.
Derived from P11 Oral Memory Systems, P21 Aniconic Aesthetic Expression
read the fuller account
Woven Reference (link)
dotted underline, evoking a stitched thread to another account
Purpose
Points to a related account or source, phrased as an invitation to hear more, echoing the oral tradition of one story leading to another (P11).
Derived from P11 Oral Memory Systems
Spoken-Field Input
underline only, no boxed border — nothing is walled in
Purpose
Collects a single line of text. Placeholder text is phrased as a prompt one would actually be asked aloud, not a generic field name.
States
restingfocused (threshold underline)filledwithheld — required but empty
Derived from P9 Ritualized Greeting, P11 Oral Memory Systems
Fuller Speech Field (textarea)
boxed, since a longer account deserves a held space
Purpose
Collects longer composed speech — a story, an account — bounded like a page held for recitation.
Derived from P11 Oral Memory Systems, P8 Proverb-Based Wisdom Transmission
Market Inquiry (search replacement)
phrased as asking the market, never a bare magnifying-glass field
Purpose
Search is reframed as entering the market square and asking — a bounded, social occasion for finding things (P22, market as civic heart) rather than querying an infinite index.
Behaviour
Results are scoped to quarters/guilds the person actually has a connection to first, before wider birni-level results, mirroring how discovery happens through known networks (P13).
Derived from P22 Nested Spatial Organization, P13 Trust-Based Commerce
A universal search bar implies an infinite flat index. This is scoped and social by default.
Open to consultation from the quarter
Consultation Switch (toggle)
green only when a harmonious, open state is active
Purpose
A binary setting, coloured with the rare harmony-green only in its "open/consultative" position — reserving that colour's meaning (P14).
Derived from P14 Mediated Conflict Resolution, P3 Consultative Decision-Making
Elder Aliyu assents
Elder Bello has not yet spoken
Council Assent (checkbox replacement)
named assent, not an anonymous tickbox
Purpose
For any multi-party decision, each option is attributed to a specific respected voice assenting or not, rather than an anonymous set of ticked boxes (P3: decisions are discussed in gatherings where the eldest summarizes and others assent or object).
States
assentedhas not yet spokenobjected (shown via mediation flow, not a red X)
Derived from P3 Consultative Decision-Making
A checkbox is anonymous and binary. This is named and process-oriented, since Hausa consensus-building is about who has spoken, not just a tally.
Speak as the household
Speak as yourself alone
Single Voice Choice (radio replacement)
which layer of identity is speaking (P19), not an arbitrary form radio
Purpose
Chooses which single identity layer is currently voicing an action — echoing the contextual salience of nested identity (P19).
Derived from P19 Multi-Layered Identity, P1 Relational Personhood

Information

Information is bounded and attributed, echoing oral-tradition custodianship (P11) — nothing floats free of a knower.

The Wall at Kano
Told by Malam Sani, mason's guild — third telling this season
Held Account (card)
every card names its teller
Purpose
A bounded unit of content that always names its source/teller in the frame itself, never as optional metadata tucked below (P11).
Derived from P11 Oral Memory Systems, P10 Apprenticeship-Based Knowledge Transfer
Threshold Seam (divider)
a faceted mark, not a bare hairline
Purpose
Separates sections with a small threshold-diamond mark, echoing the physical zaure gate between spaces of different intimacy (P16).
Derived from P16 Inward-Facing Domestic Architecture
Guild-attested
Attestation Badge
solid ink block — a stamped seal, not a rounded pill
Purpose
Marks that a specific institution (guild, mosque council, quarter elders) has attested to something, echoing guild quality standards (P13).
Derived from P13 Trust-Based Commerce
leatherwork
Craft Tag
outlined in threshold-red — a category one can walk into
Purpose
Names a craft-quarter or topic category the content belongs to, phrased as a place (echoing craft quarters concentrating practitioners of the same trade, P13).
Derived from P13 Trust-Based Commerce, P22 Nested Spatial Organization
Kano ▸ Dye-guild
Path Chip
a removable, filled marker showing an active scope
Purpose
Shows an active filter/scope as a nested path, reinforcing nested modularity even in filter UI (P22).
Derived from P22 Nested Spatial Organization
Household matter
Field Label
monospace, ledger-toned — precise, not decorative
Derived from P11 Oral Memory Systems (precise record-keeping register)
between zuhur and asr, three days into damina
Rhythm Stamp (timestamp replacement)
prayer-segment + seasonal position, not raw hh:mm
Purpose
States when something happened using the actual lived time structure — prayer segment and season — with exact clock time available only on request (P15, P30).
Derived from P15 Sacred Time Structuring, P30 Seasonal Agricultural Rhythm
"2 hours ago" assumes clock-time is the natural unit. Here, segment-and-season is the natural unit; clock time is the derived, secondary fact.
told 14 times·held by the dye-guild
Provenance Line (metadata)
who holds it and how often retold, not raw analytics
Derived from P11 Oral Memory Systems
Apprenticeship Bar (progress)
fills like years served toward graduation
Purpose
Where progress must be shown at all (e.g. an apprenticeship-style onboarding), the fill and colour echo years served toward a graduation ceremony rather than a generic loading percentage (P10).
Derived from P10 Apprenticeship-Based Knowledge Transfer
Considered Pause (loading)
three faceted beats — the rhythm of measured elder speech
Purpose
Signals the system is composing a response, paced like the deliberate pauses of measured speech rather than an anxious spinner (P4, P31).
Derived from P31 Silence as Meaningful Communication, P4 Hierarchical Deference
No one has yet spoken in this quarter.
Unspoken Space (empty state)
framed as silence, not failure (P31)
Purpose
An empty list is framed as meaningful silence — an invitation, not an error — using the ink-2 "silence" tone deliberately reserved for this (P31).
Derived from P31 Silence as Meaningful Communication
Conventional empty states apologize ("nothing here yet 😢"). This one treats silence as a legitimate, even respectful, state.

Social

This is where a numeric "like" has the least grounding of anything in the brief. Reputation is qualitative and distributed through gossip networks (P2), not a tally anyone can see accumulate in real time. Every social atom below was rebuilt from that fact.

Well said
Noted
Named Response (reaction/"like" replacement)
a short attested phrase, never a raw count
Purpose
Reactions are short spoken affirmations ("Well said," "Noted," "May God reward you") attributed to specific people you can see, not an anonymous aggregate number.
Behaviour
No running tally is shown by default; a small set of names who reacted is available on request, mirroring how esteem is discussed by name in a gossip network (P2) rather than published as a scoreboard.
Why it differs
A like-count creates a visible, gameable public scoreboard, which is precisely the "public dispute"-adjacent display Hausa social norms structurally avoid (P2: public behaviour carefully calibrated; P6: gossip is a private, distributed mechanism, not a public leaderboard).
Derived from P2 Reputation as Social Currency, META-PRINCIPLE 7 Reputation as Distributed Enforcement
3 have spoken on this
Voices Gathered (comment marker)
"spoken," not "commented" — oral register throughout
Purpose
Indicates how many people have contributed to the discussion beneath a piece of content, phrased as speaking rather than typing, to keep the oral-performance register (P11).
Derived from P11 Oral Memory Systems, P3 Consultative Decision-Making
Malam Bello
Named Address (mention)
full respectful name/title, never a bare @handle
Purpose
Addresses a specific person by their honorific and name, since Hausa address is never stripped of relational/status markers (P4).
Derived from P4 Hierarchical Deference
An @handle is a stripped, informal token. This always carries the honorific the person is actually owed.
dye-guild matters
Guild Thread (hashtag replacement)
a phrase naming a community of practice, not a # token
Purpose
Groups content by craft-quarter or topic, phrased as a readable name rather than a symbol-prefixed keyword — echoing how quarters were organised by occupation (P22).
Derived from P22 Nested Spatial Organization, P13 Trust-Based Commerce
Carry to another quarter
Carry Onward (share replacement)
names a destination quarter — sharing is never anonymous broadcast
Purpose
Explicitly names which quarter/person content is being carried to, echoing the hospitality obligation attached to relaying information between communities (P6).
Why it differs
A share button broadcasts to an undefined audience instantly. This requires naming a destination first — an unaddressed broadcast has no grounding in a hospitality-based culture.
Derived from P6 Hospitality as Sacred Obligation
Hold in Memory (save/bookmark replacement)
framed as personal custodianship, echoing the rememberer's role
Purpose
Keeps content for the person to privately steward and potentially retell, matching the professional rememberer's role of holding knowledge for later recitation (P11).
Derived from P11 Oral Memory Systems
Inner courtyard — family only
Threshold Level (privacy indicator)
graduated levels named after compound zones, not a lock icon toggle
Purpose
States which graduated zone content sits in — zaure (open reception), gida (household), inner courtyard (family only) — mirroring the compound's actual spatial privacy gradient (P5, P16).
States
zaure — opengida — householdinner courtyard — family only
Derived from P16 Inward-Facing Domestic Architecture, P5 Gendered Spatial Segregation
A public/private toggle is binary. This is a graduated spatial system with named zones, because that is how Hausa privacy is actually structured.
Kano dye-guild — 340 members
Guild Marker (community marker)
named after craft-quarter organisation
Purpose
Marks membership in a bounded community of practice, echoing craft-quarter organisation by occupation and guild quality norms (P13, P22).
Derived from P22 Nested Spatial Organization, P13 Trust-Based Commerce
Awaiting Word (notification indicator)
a single quiet threshold-mark, never a loud red counter badge
Purpose
Signals unattended matters with a single faceted mark rather than a numeric badge that escalates in visual urgency — because unrequested interruption is itself a social breach (P9, attention is requested, not seized).
Behaviour
Never uses colour-blinking or motion to demand attention; the mark simply exists until greeted (opened) in the person's own time.
Derived from P9 Ritualized Greeting, META-PRINCIPLE 3 Indirectness as Social Lubricant
A red numeric badge is engineered to create anxiety and interruption. This is a quiet, patient mark — closer to a note left at the threshold than a siren.

Media

Media containers use faceted, patterned frames rather than plain rectangles, since even functional objects in Hausa material culture are decorated (P21).

Woven Frame (image container)
diagonal relief-pattern placeholder, not a grey box or a face-icon
Purpose
Holds any image. Its placeholder state uses the same faceted diagonal weave found in relief carving rather than a flat grey rectangle, since decoration is expected even in a frame that is momentarily empty (P21).
Derived from P21 Aniconic Aesthetic Expression
Moving Account (video container)
a faceted seal marks "play," echoing performance, not a circle button
Derived from P11 Oral Memory Systems, P21 Aniconic Aesthetic Expression
Recited by Malama Hauwa — praise poem
Recitation Holder (audio container)
named performer displayed, since oral performance is never anonymous
Derived from P11 Oral Memory Systems, P8 Proverb-Based Wisdom Transmission
ledger.pdf — 3 pages
Bundled Item (attachment marker)
faceted-seal paperclip replacement
Derived from P21 Aniconic Aesthetic Expression

Feedback

Feedback in Hausa social norms is delivered indirectly wherever possible (P7, P8, P31). Errors especially are softened — never a blunt red slam — since direct criticism is systematically avoided even when correction is necessary.

It is accepted. May it bring good.
Accepted (success)
the rare harmony-green, plus a blessing phrase
Derived from P14 Mediated Conflict Resolution (yafewa), P23 Religious Framing of Action
Consider this before continuing — it may affect your good name.
Consider This (warning)
gold-toned, framed as protecting reputation
Purpose
Warns of a consequence in terms of reputational stake, since reputation-protection is the primary behavioural lever in this culture (P2).
Derived from P2 Reputation as Social Currency
This did not go through. Perhaps try once more, or bring it to someone who can help.
Did Not Go Through (error)
indirect phrasing, offers mediation — never a blunt "ERROR" or blame
Purpose
States a failure without assigning blame and always offers a path via a third party — matching how negative information is delivered through circumlocution and mediation rather than direct confrontation (P7, P14).
Why it differs
A red "Error: request failed" is blunt, impersonal, and offers no relational recourse. This mirrors how bad news is actually delivered — softened, and pointing toward a mediator.
Derived from P7 Indirect Communication, P14 Mediated Conflict Resolution
Before this is offered — are you certain? It cannot easily be called back once given.
Before You Offer (confirmation)
framed around the irreversibility of a given word (amana)
Derived from P13 Trust-Based Commerce (amana — keeping one's word)
The quarter is asking for your word on this matter.
The Quarter Asks (attention request)
framed as a community, not the system, requesting input
Purpose
Requests input from the person, but is careful to attribute the request to a human community rather than "the app," since consultation is a social act between people, never a system demand (P3).
Derived from P3 Consultative Decision-Making
Part 4

Icon System

Every glyph in Zaure is constructed from one base module — a faceted, truncated rhombus, the same unit found in carved mud-relief and geometric textile work (P21, P16). Icons are not simplified drawings of objects; they are small architectural assemblies, built the way relief tiles combine to form a larger wall pattern (P22, nested modularity applied at the smallest possible scale).

Visual Grammar

Base module

A single truncated rhombus (six-sided facet). Every icon is one, two, or three of this module combined by rotation, scale, or overlap — never freehand drawing.

Stroke philosophy

Angular, faceted joins only. No rounded caps or soft corners — mud-relief is carved, not moulded, so every line meets its neighbour at a clean facet edge.

Abstraction level

Fully abstract. No icon depicts a person, face, animal, or realistic object silhouette — consistent with aniconism (P21). Concepts are rendered through composition and count, not resemblance.

Symbolism

Meaning is carried by fill state (open outline = potential/unfilled; solid = actual/given) and by module count (one module = an individual act; three nested = a communal/consultative act) — not by pictorial resemblance to the named concept.

Geometric language

Six-fold and diamond symmetry throughout, echoing the geometric decoration that replaced figuration under Islamic aesthetic constraint (P21) — never circles-and-rounded-squares, the default grammar of conventional icon sets.

Semantic consistency

Threshold-red fill always means "requires a decision/crossing." Given-gold fill always means "something was given." Outline-only always means "not yet acted upon." This mapping holds across every icon in the system without exception.

Icon Specimen Sheet

A working set assembled entirely from the base module, shown at rest. Compare against the icons already used throughout Part 3 above — every glyph in this document is drawn from this same closed set of construction rules.

Objects Replaced Rather Than Redrawn

Some conventional icons were not translated into this grammar at all — they were replaced by an entirely different interaction object, because the underlying concept itself had no grounding.

Heart / thumbs-up icon

Replaced with the Named Response mechanism (attributed short phrases). A heart icon implies instant, low-cost, anonymous emotional broadcast — the opposite of reputation being earned through demonstrated, attributable conduct (P2).

Bell icon

Replaced with the quiet single threshold-mark (Awaiting Word). A ringing bell demands interruption; interruption without invitation has no grounding in a culture where attention is greeted into, not seized (P9).

Lock icon

Replaced with named Threshold Levels (zaure / gida / inner courtyard). A padlock implies a single binary secured/unsecured state; Hausa privacy is graduated and spatial, so one icon-state cannot represent it (P16).

Magnifying glass alone

Kept, but never used unlabelled — always paired with the Market Inquiry field, since search-as-pure-icon implies an instant, ambient, always-on index rather than a bounded, entered market occasion (P22).

Part 5

Consistency Audit

A self-review of where conventional software assumptions could have leaked in unnoticed, and what was changed as a result.

Rectangular cards, generally

Leak: Cards throughout Part 3 are plain rectangles with square corners — a default that could be read as inherited from screen-rectangle convention rather than derived from the principles. Assessment: the compound courtyard itself is rectilinear in the source material (P16), so the rectangle is not actually ungrounded — but the faceted, notched corner treatment used on primary buttons should have been applied more broadly, to avoid an accidental split between "faceted" atoms and "plain rectangle" atoms. Flagged as the weakest point of visual consistency in this draft.

Scroll-based, infinite content lists

Leak: Nothing above explicitly rejects infinite-scroll pagination, a Western attention-economy invention with no anthropological grounding — and arguably in tension with P9 (attention is greeted into, not seized) and discovery-through-bounded-market-occasions (P22). Correction: the Market Inquiry atom is deliberately scoped and bounded, and content should load in small, occasion-sized batches like a market day, never a bottomless feed. This should be stated as a platform-level rule rather than left implicit.

Left-to-right layout assumption

Leak: Every demonstration above reads left-to-right. Hausa is written in Boko (Latin script, left-to-right) today, but Ajami (Arabic-script Hausa) is right-to-left and remains culturally significant. Correction: the nested spacing and threshold-path atoms should be built RTL-mirrorable from the start; this was not fully executed here and is flagged rather than silently left in.

A single global "profile" destination

Leak: Even after rejecting the avatar-as-face default, the Identity category still implicitly assumes one canonical profile view — a flat, single-page convention. Correction: per P19, a truer system would render identity differently depending on which nested space the viewer stands in — family space shows lineage-forward, guild space shows craft-forward — rather than one fixed page. Documented as an area needing further first-principles work beyond this draft.

Toggle switches, generally

Leak: The Consultation Switch retains the physical slide-track shape of a Western toggle, just recoloured. Assessment: kept, because no principle in the source material speaks against a binary open/closed spatial gate as a concept — compounds do have gates that are open or shut. Judged grounded enough to retain, but this is the closest call in the system and is flagged rather than asserted with full confidence.

Numeric metadata surfaces (member counts, page counts)

Leak: Community Marker and Attachment Marker both still show small numeric counts ("340 members," "3 pages"). Assessment: distinguished from the rejected "like count" because these numbers describe bounded, factual group size or object length rather than accumulated social approval — but the boundary is genuinely close. A stricter version of this system might replace "340 members" with a named-elder-count instead, matching the qualitative register used for reputation everywhere else.

Modal/dialog pattern for confirmations

Leak: The Confirmation atom is described in isolation, not shown blocking the entire screen the way a Western modal dialog does. Correction: a full implementation should render confirmation as a mediated pause within the flow — closer to a respected elder stepping in to ask a question — rather than a hard interrupt that dims and locks the interface, since a full-screen modal lock is a control-through-force pattern with no grounding in a consultative culture (P3).
